M. L. King School Closing

On Tuesday, January 19th, the District announced its intention of closing of the Martin Luther King Jr. School in Hartford's Upper Albany neighborhood.  The school will be phased out over the next few years, with the building officially closing at the end of the 2013 school year.

The closing comes as a result of the "age and excessive repair" needed by the building.  The announcement was delivered to parents and community members at the school late in the afternoon.  Students who would normally be given first preference to MLK school will be given first preference to two other elementary schools nearby, the Global Communications Academy and Achievement First Hartford charter school.

Sankofa Kuumba CAC History

Following a visit to West Africa, "Nandi" Christine Dixon-Smith, Executive/Artistic Director, founded SANKOFA in 1986 in Hartford's North End. Nandi and a handful of artists established arts-based programs at local churches and public schools. SANKOFA operated for over 14 years providing multicultural visual and performance arts presentations and performances before its incorporation in 2000 as a 501c)3), community-based, nonprofit arts and cultural organization. Beginning in 1997, SANKOFA began to offer focused arts education programming in the Hartford public schools. In 2003, we began a pilot program, The Creative You and subsequently, Teens & Technology in 2006, integrating core competencies with the arts in a dynamic environment for in-school children and youth. SANKOFA has received numerous awards, including the President's Humanitarian Council Award in 1997 and, most recently, the Connecticut Commission on Culture and Tourism's Excellence in Arts Education Award as well as the Greater Hartford Arts Council Excellence in Arts Award.

Kwanzaa 2009

On December 27th, 2009, Sankofa Kuumba Cultural Arts Consortium put on a stellar Kwanzaa celebration performance at the Charter Oak Cultural Center in Hartford, Connecticut. The performance kicked off the first day (UMOJA). The program included: African drum and Dance, Caribbean Drum and Dance, Spoken Word, Interpretive dance, and Hip-Hop dancing. Also on hand were vendors offering exquisite handcrafted jewelry and natural oils. The attendance was phenomenal and at the finale; dancers invited the audience to participate as they pulled onlookers from the crowd to take part and express themselves through creative movement. The fun didn't end there - Sankofa passed out toys and books donated by Judea House while the adults enjoyed their special gift of fresh fruit. ("Kwanzaa" is derived from the phrase "matunda ya kwanza" which means "first fruits"). Sankofa would like to thank Charter Oak Cultural Center and the many other sponsors who made this event possible. If you didn't make it this year, visit our site for upcoming performances that I'm sure you and your family will enjoy!
